POPLARVILLE, Miss. — The Pearl River women's basketball team celebrated Sophomore Night in a big way Thursday night, crushing Hinds 73-45 to secure at least a share of the 2026 MACCC Championship.
The Wildcats will head to rival Gulf Coast on Monday at 5:30 p.m. as the teams battle to secure the outright conference title.
"It was April 12 when Pearl River officially announced me, and we hit the ground running," head coach Shanae Govan-Williams said. "We talked to our team about our vision for this program, and everyone has bought in.
"We were just focused tonight. Hinds played hard and pushed us. We weathered the storms of their runs. I was proud of our overall effort on both ends of the court."
Sophomore Mattison Bell (Philadelphia, Choctaw Central) made the first splash on the scoreboard, draining a 3-pointer to give the Wildcats an early lead. Madison Hughes (Olive Branch; Center Hill) kept the momentum going from beyond the arc, pushing Pearl River ahead 10-6 just three minutes into the contest.
The Wildcats added a free throw before Cy'Nara Robinson (McGehee, Ark.) scored her third and fourth points of the night, stretching the advantage to 13-6. After Pearl River matched a lone free throw from Hinds, Robinson answered with a layup to send the game into the second quarter with the Wildcats in front, 18-14.
Coming out of the break, Pearl River caught fire. Bell knocked down another 3-pointer, setting up a Jae'la Smith (Vicksburg; Porter's Chapel) driving layup. Toniah Watts (Terry) followed with a fastbreak layup off a steal, energizing the home crowd.
Hinds briefly responded with a basket of its own, but the Wildcats quickly regained control. Jahanna Wilson (Jackson; Callaway) and Chauncey Dixon (Leroy; McIntosh) scored on back-to-back possessions, and Hughes capped an 11-4 Pearl River run with another 3-pointer. The surge sent the Wildcats into halftime comfortably ahead, 38-20.
Dixon opened the third quarter with a thunderous putback, igniting yet another Pearl River run. This stretch was fueled entirely by points in the paint, as Wilson, Robinson, Bell, and Hughes each converted inside to complete a 10-2 run.
Holding a commanding 48-21 lead, the Wildcats continued to pour it on, extending the margin to 50-25 in the closing minute of the quarter. Smith closed the third with a straight-on 3-pointer, giving Pearl River a 53-25 advantage heading into the final period.
With a sizable lead in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats let it fly from long range. No one was hotter than Robinson, who buried two 3-pointers and added two layups to reach the 20-point mark for the night, stretching the lead to 65-35 with just minutes remaining.
The final moments resembled an NBA All-Star Game, with post players stepping beyond the arc and shots going up from all over the floor. Though many of the attempts missed their mark, the mood inside the coliseum remained light as smiles filled the stands. When the final buzzer sounded, Pearl River secured a decisive 73-45 victory.
LEADING THE WAY
