CARHTAGE, Texas. — Pearl River women's basketball ended the Mary-Ann Otwell Classic with a 1-1 record after dropping a hard-fought game 50-48 game against host Panola College Saturday afternoon.
For the Wildcats (1-1 overall), the Mary-Ann Otwell Classic was more than just two basketball games — it was an early-season gut check for a team under new leadership and eager to prove itself.
"Starting the season against two really great teams picked to finish near the top of one of the toughest conferences in the nation is really good for us — just seeing where we are," head coach Shanea Govan-Williams said. "I'm excited about the future, and hopefully we can come back to Mississippi and work on the things we need to improve on."
Pearl River, riding the momentum from Friday night's win, came out hot on Saturday, jumping ahead 15-5 on Panola College (1-2) before the game began to settle in. The Fillies responded with a run of their own, cutting the deficit to 21-18 after the first quarter.
The second quarter turned into a defensive battle, with both teams combining for just 13 points. Pearl River managed four of those, trailing 27-25 at halftime.
Out of the break, Jae'la Smith (Vicksburg; Porter's Chapel) tied the game with a quick basket, then added two more layups in the quarter before the Madison Hughes (Olive Branch; Center Hill) show began.
"Madison did great, she did what we knew she could do," Govan-Williams said. "Her versatility, being able to score the ball as well as be a good defender and rebounder, we look for that from her. It's inspiring."
Hughes capped the third quarter with a layup in the final seconds to give the Wildcats a 37-35 lead heading into the fourth.
In the final frame, the freshman guard caught fire, draining a pair of 3-pointers to ignite the Pearl River offense. Her second triple came off an inbound pass, where she took one dribble and buried the shot from beyond the arc. Moments later, she drove hard to the basket, finished through contact, and converted the three-point play to give the Wildcats their largest lead of the night at 46-40.
Panola refused to go away, hitting a jumper and getting a defensive stop to cut the deficit to four. With the Fillies pressing, Hughes stepped up again, taking a charge to give Pearl River back control of the ball.
Panola stormed back to take a 49-48 lead after grabbing an offensive rebound off a missed free throw and converting the putback. The two teams traded defensive stops down the stretch until Panola gained possession with 10.8 seconds remaining.
The Wildcats intentionally fouled, sending Panola to the line with 8.9 seconds remaining. The Fillies missed both free throws, forcing Pearl River to call a timeout to advance the ball. However, a late turnover sealed a 50-48 victory for Panola.
LEADING THE WAY
Even in defeat, there were bright spots for Pearl River. Hughes led the Wildcats with 22 points, shooting 9-of-11 from the field and a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc. The freshman has scored in double figures in both games this season and is averaging 15.5 points per contest.
Smith finished with nine points and nine rebounds. Cy'Nara Robinson (McGehee, Ark.) had seven points and eight rebounds.
