WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. — Four Wildcats finished in double figures Tuesday as the Pearl River women's basketball team combined a balanced scoring effort with stifling defense to defeat National Park 66–55.
"I'm just proud of the team effort. I feel like tonight was a really big team win," coach Shanae Govan-Williams said. "Everybody stepped up — whether it was to rebound, defend or score — everybody stepped up."
Pearl River (2-1 overall) came out strong to start the night, getting on the board first with a layup from Cy'Nara Robinson (McGehee, Ark.). Not long after, Jae'la Smith (Vicksburg; Porter's Chapel) and Madison Hughes (Olive Branch; Center Hill) knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Wildcats an early 8–2 lead over National Park (3-3).
The Nighthawks answered with two free throws and a layup to trim the gap to 8–6. Hughes stopped the run with a layup, but National Park quickly put together a fastbreak bucket and a jumper to tie things up at 10–10.
PRCC didn't stay quiet for long. Smith sank two free throws, and a defensive stop turned into a Mattison Bell (Philadelphia; Choctaw Central) 3-pointer to push the Wildcats ahead 15–10. That shot kicked off a 10–2 burst, highlighted by another Bell 3-pointer and an Aubrey Hill (Tupelo; Biloxi) layup, stretching the advantage to 20–12. Two late free throws closed out the quarter with Pearl River up 22–14.
National Park opened the second with three quick points, but the Wildcats answered right back. Smith, Robinson, and Jahanna Wilson (Jackson; Callaway) each scored during a 6–0 run to steady the lead. The Nighthawks countered with a run of their own, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to pull within 28–23, then added a free throw to make it a four-point game.
Pearl River responded once again. Toniah Watts (Terry) powered in a layup, Robinson followed with another score, and Alana Smith knocked down three free throws to widen the gap. Wilson capped the half in style with a 3-pointer, sending the Wildcats into the break up 38–28.
The third quarter opened as a defensive battle, with both teams coming up empty for the first five minutes. Wilson finally broke the silence with a free throw, then went on to score the next six points for Pearl River, pushing the Wildcats ahead 45–31 midway through the period.
"We just stepped up on the defensive side tonight. Our easy offensive buckets came from picking up the intensity on defense," Govan-Williams said. "That's what we talked about at halftime — just pick it up on defense and the offense will take care of itself."
National Park answered with a free throw, but Bell quickly responded by drilling yet another corner 3-pointer. The Nighthawks put together a brief 5–1 spurt before Wilson knocked down two more free throws, and Atesa Johnson (Lewisville, Ark.; Fayetteville) closed the quarter with a layup to send PRCC into the fourth up 53–37.
Pearl River added to its lead early in the final frame as Robinson hit a free throw and Wilson followed with a jumper, giving the Wildcats their largest lead of the night at 56–39.
National Park tried to chip away with back-to-back baskets, but Robinson steadied things with two free throws and a layup off a feed from Hughes. Wilson continued her dominant second half with a layup and two more free throws, and Bell capped her strong shooting night with her fourth 3-pointer. The Wildcats went on to win, 66–55, in a powerful defensive showing.
LEADING THE WAY
Wilson led the Wildcats with 15 points and six assists, including an impressive 11-point surge in the second half to help put the game out of reach.
Smith joined her in double figures, finishing with 13 points, seven of which came during Pearl River's strong first half.
Robinson scored 13 points of her own, providing steady production throughout the night. She also added 11 points, three assists, and one block to her performance.
Off the bench, Bell delivered a major spark, knocking down four 3-pointers on her way to a 12-point performance.
