RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — The Pearl River rodeo team made the trip to Arkansas Tech over the weekend for its penultimate rodeo of the season. The Wildcat men turned in a strong showing, finishing fourth overall with 225 points, while the women placed ninth with 30 points.
On the men's side, Tyler Porter (Tylertown) and Tate Joiner (Husser, La.; Loranger) both qualified for the short go in calf roping after impressive opening rounds. Joiner topped the field in round one with a blistering 9.9-second run, while Porter clocked a 10.9 to tie for third. Joiner was unable to post a time in the finals, but Porter followed his first-round performance with a 19.2 in the short go to secure a second-place finish in the average.
Porter also picked up points in steer wrestling, advancing to the short go after a 5.3-second run in the opening round. He backed it up with a 5.8 in the finals to place fifth overall in the event.
For the women, Jenna Johnson (Mt. Olive; Mize) represented Pearl River in the short go of barrel racing. Johnson posted a 15.80 in the long round before improving to a 15.49 in the finals, earning 30 team points.
