MERIDIAN, Miss. — Pearl River rodeo turned in one of its most complete performances of the spring at the East Mississippi Rodeo, with the men's team stacking points across multiple events to finish third overall with 475. The women placed ninth.
"I really feel like everyone got it together finally," head coach Frank Graves said. "We've been having one place here and there, but I think this week we all showed up at the same time."
On the women's side, Darby Poole (Robertsdale) punched her ticket to the short go in breakaway roping after a quick 2.9-second run in the long round. She came up empty in the finals, but still showed the kind of speed that can cash checks in a hurry.
Tyler Porter (Tylertown) was dominant in steer wrestling, putting together one of the top all-around performances of the weekend. He threw down a 3.9-second run to win the long round, then backed it up with a 4.5 in the short go to tie for first. His 8.4-second aggregate secured the average title and led all Pearl River scorers.
Pearl River's team roping duo of Bryson Crawford (Felda, Ala.) and Gentry Silver (Iowa, La.) made a strong push for the top spot, finishing second overall with 150 points. After a clean 6.9-second run in the long round put them in contention, the pair delivered a 6.3 in the short go — one of the fastest runs of the night — for a 13.2-second aggregate.
Jay Rodrigue (Thibodaux, La.) added another highlight in bull riding, covering his bull for a 77-point ride to take second place and add 50 points to the team total.
