POPLARVILLE, Miss. — The Pearl River rodeo team turned in an impressive performance at the Arkansas-Monticello rodeo, finishing sixth on the men's side and third on the women's side. Seven Wildcats advanced to the championship round.
"We had a good rodeo over the weekend," head coach Frank Graves said. "The freshmen have started to step up and do well, so I was happy about that. We're really coming on strong, and when we get it all together at the same time, we have a chance to be special. We've got Murray State left, then we'll look forward to the spring."
MEN'S RESULTS
Tyler Porter (Tylertown) continued his incredible start to the season, earning 145 points in calf roping after placing second overall. He clocked a 10.2-second run in the first round to sit second and followed it with a 10.0-second time in the championship round for a combined 20.2.
In steer wrestling, Porter narrowly made the championship round with an 8.8-second run, then turned in a 5.4-second effort in the finals to finish sixth and collect 60 points.
"Tyler has been steady for us," Graves said. "He's placed in nearly every rodeo."
Freshman Cooper Adams (Fort Worth, Texas; Penn Foster) won the first round of bull riding with a score of 79 but was unable to register a qualified ride in the short round. He earned 80 points for the event.
The duo of Ryan Bracey (Darbun; West Marion) and Dalton Norris (Lafayette, Ala.; Chambers Academy) advanced to the championship round of team roping after an 8.8-second first-round run but came up short of a qualified time in the finals.
WOMEN'S RESULTS
Presley Stogner was outstanding in breakaway roping, posting a 3.0-second time in the first round and a 3.7-second run in the championship round for a combined 6.7 seconds. She was one of just five competitors to record a catch in the short round, earning 73.33 points.
"Presley finally broke the ice, so that was really nice to see," Graves said.
Jenna Johnson (Mt. Olive; Mize) shined in barrel racing, finishing second overall with an average of 30.03 seconds. The freshman turned in a 15.21-second first run before posting a blazing 14.82 in the finals.
"Jenna has a really good horse, and she was finally able to put together a couple of good runs," Graves said. "I'm happy about that."
