Pearl River men's golf opens spring season

POPLARVILLE, Miss. — The Pearl River men's golf team wrapped up competition at the Pearl River Invitational on Tuesday, finishing 10th overall after posting a 78-over-par total across two rounds at Diamondhead Country Club.

"I'm really proud of the way our guys competed this week," said head coach Coby Scarborough. "We didn't get off to the start we wanted on Monday, but the response we saw on Tuesday says a lot about this team's character. They stayed patient, trusted the work they've been putting in, and really battled all day. Moving forward, we just need to keep focusing on consistency, managing the little mistakes, and continuing to grow our confidence."

Jeremiah Cochran (Gautier; Covenant Christian Academy) led the Wildcats, placing 24th in a competitive 71-player field. Cochran opened the tournament by teeing off on hole No. 1 and immediately carding a birdie to move to 1-under-par. He added nine pars and an eagle on hole No. 17 during his first round to finish at 8-over-par.

On day two, Cochran improved upon his opening round, recording 12 pars and a birdie on hole No. 10 to card a 79 — one stroke better than his first-round total. His performance was highlighted by strong play on the par-5s, where he shot 3-under-par over the two-day event.

Seth Tubb (Hattiesburg; Presbyterian Christian) was next for Pearl River, tying for 40th place at 21-over-par. After an 87 in the opening round, Tubb bounced back with a 78 on day two. He rebounded from a birdie-free first round by birdieing holes No. 5 and No. 9 in the final round.

William Dickerson (Gautier) matched Tubb's overall finish and showed significant improvement as the tournament progressed. After carding a 16-over-par round one, Dickerson led the Wildcats on day two with a 77. He paced the team with five total birdies, including four in the final round. Two of those came in impressive back-to-back fashion on holes No. 1 and No. 2.

Riley Barnett (Lakeville, Minn.; Lakeville South) finished 44th overall at 22-over-par, posting rounds of 82 and 84. Barnett tallied three birdies during the tournament, the second-most among Pearl River golfers. Sean Stiglets (Ocean Springs; St. Martin) placed 55th after rounds of 89 and 83. He recorded three birdies over the two rounds, including birdies on holes No. 1 and No. 9 in the final round.

Three Wildcats also competed as individuals. Lucas Johnson (Long Beach) led the trio, carding a 9-over-par round on day one, followed by a 10-over-par round on day two. Brayden Smith (Sumrall) and Joshua Glass (Lucedale; George County) rounded out the individual competitors, finishing 61st and 69th, respectively. The pair combined for two birdies and 20 pars over the course of the tournament.

Pearl River will look to build on its performance as the Wildcats continue their spring schedule.
