POPLARVILLE, Miss. — The Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference announced its All-MACCC teams this week, and the Pearl River men's basketball program was well represented with two major honorees.
Freshman guard Christian Gilliland (Memphis, Tenn.; ABC Prep) headlined the selections, earning First Team All-MACCC honors and being named the conference's Freshman of the Year. Fellow freshman Daijon Leatherman (Slidell, La.; Legacy School of Sport and Sciences) also garnered recognition, securing a spot on the Second Team.
CHRISTIAN GILLILAND
Gilliland put together one of the most electric freshman campaigns in the conference, leading Pearl River in scoring while emerging as one of the league's most efficient offensive players. Appearing in all 31 games, he averaged 23.2 points per game while shooting an impressive 54.7 percent from the field and 45.1 percent from beyond the arc.
The Memphis native also converted at an 88.8 percent clip from the free-throw line, showcasing his all-around scoring ability. In addition to his scoring, Gilliland contributed 3.5 rebounds and 2.4 assists per contest, consistently impacting the game on multiple levels. His performance throughout the season established him as one of the premier freshmen in the NJCAA ranks.
DAIJON LEATHERMAN
Leatherman proved to be a dominant force in the paint during his freshman season, earning Second Team All-MACCC honors after a year of consistent production. The 6-foot-9 forward/center played in all 31 games and averaged 13.3 points and 8.6 rebounds per contest.
Leatherman's efficiency stood out, as he shot 62.1 percent from the field while anchoring Pearl River's interior presence on both ends of the floor. His physicality and ability to control the glass made him a key piece of the Wildcats' success throughout the season.
