POPLARVILLE, Miss. — The Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference announced its Players of the Week on Tuesday morning and Pearl River men's basketball standout Christian Gilliland (Memphis, Tenn.; ABC Prep) earned the conference's top honor.
The recognition marks back-to-back weekly awards for the Wildcats after teammate Daijon Leatherman claimed the distinction last week.
Gilliland turned in one of his most complete stretches of the season, averaging 28.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, one assist and one block across two contests. The Siena signee opened the week with 18 points on the road at Southwest before delivering one of the most electric performances in the conference this season — a 39-point explosion against Hinds. He shot an efficient 14-for-21 from the floor in that contest, consistently finishing through contact, knocking down perimeter shots and converting at the free-throw line.
The Memphis native has been a steady offensive force all season in his lone campaign with the Wildcats. Through 28 games, Gilliland is averaging 23.3 points per game to go along with 3.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists, helping guide Pearl River to a 16-12 record entering the postseason. His scoring average currently leads the MACCC, and his 88.7% mark from the free-throw line also tops the conference.
Pearl River opens postseason play Thursday night, hosting Copiah-Lincoln Community College in the Region 23 First Round. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. in Poplarville as the Wildcats look to carry their late-season momentum into tournament action.
