Pearl River men's basketball falls at Coahoma

POPLARVILLE, Miss — Pearl River men's basketball fell on the road to Coahoma 80-56, falling to 6-3 in MACCC play.

Pearl River (14-10; 6-3) started the game with Kamarian Mayfield (Waynesboro; Quitman) scoring the team's first points on a tough layup in the face of a Coahoma (15-5; 5-4) defender. The Tigers quickly retook the lead, getting out to a 4-2 lead.

Pearl River kept fighting, but the Tiger offense kept pushing, extending their lead to 23-8 before Christian Gilliland (Memphis, Tenn.; ABC Prep) and Jayden Sampson (Cleveland; Cleveland Central) combined to go on a 6-0 run, cutting the Tigers' lead to 23-14.

Coahoma answered the run, scoring 12 straight points, jumping out to a 38-16 advantage before sending the game into halftime down 40-20.

In the second half, the Wildcats tried to come back from the halftime deficit. Reece Garrison (Olive Branch) started the scoring in the second half with Daijon Leatherman (Slidell, La.; Legacy School of Sports and Sciences) and Gilliland adding in buckets of their own. The Tigers, however, answered their baskets, only letting the Wildcats cut the deficit to 17.

Down 47-30, Leatherman, Mayfield and Gilliland combined for 10 out of Pearl River's next 12 points, cutting the Coahoma lead to 12 at 53-41. The Wildcats kept fighting, but the halftime deficit was too much to overcome, and Pearl River fell 77-56 on the road.
