Pearl River football looks to rebound against Itawamba

POPLARVILLE, Miss. — After showing flashes of promise in its season opener against Northwest, the Pearl River football team will aim to put it all together Thursday when the Wildcats host Itawamba inside Dobie Holden Stadium.

Before the 7 p.m. kickoff, Pearl River will host the weekly Wildcat Walk at 5:30 p.m.

ABOUT THE WILDCATS
Reese Mooney (Clinton; Denham Springs) had a great debut for the Wildcats, completing 23 of 37 passes for 291 yards and two touchdowns. Mooney's 291 yards were the most in a game since Cooper Callis threw for 348 yards in 2018 against Mississippi Delta.

Three receivers have five-plus catches for the Wildcats last week, led by Kedrick Triplett (Florence, Ala.), who caught eight passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Howard Kinchen (Lafayette, La.; Patterson) hauled in six passes for 69 yards and Donovan McGowan (Mandeville, La.) had five catches for 64 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker Amarion Tyson (Picayune) led the way against Northwest, tallying 13 tackles and one sack. Garrett Orgas (Vicksburg; Warren Central) also had double-digit tackles with 10, including one tackle for loss. Jalen Anderson (Slidell, La.) had five tackles, 1.5 TFLs, one sack and one forced fumble.

ABOUT THE INDIANS
Itawamba enters the game after falling to Hinds 34-7 in the season opener. Deljay Bailey led the ICC air attack, finishing 19-for-33 for 211 yards. 

Nate Branch, Marcellus Jackson and Tavaris Coles each eclipsed 50 yards, with Branch leading the way with 73 on five catches.

Jaylen Foster and Mykel Allen led the rushing attack. Foster finished with 15 carries for 54 years while Mykel Allen had 16 attempts for 49 yards.

Defensively, ICC managed six tackles for loss for 27 yards. Landon Richardson led the way with six solo tackles and two TFLs. Orel Gray also had six tackles.

According to Pearl River record books, the Wildcats hold a 26-17-1 all-time series lead over the Indians. ICC won last season's matchup 10-0.
