POPLARVILLE, Miss. — Pearl River had its moments Friday night but couldn't string enough points together to topple visiting Panola College, falling 3-0 (14-25 9-25, 13-25).
The Wildcats (5-6 overall) won't have much time to regroup as they'll tangle with Panola College (11-3) again Saturday at 1 p.m.
PRCC earned the match's first point courtesy of a Lashundria Chatman (Brandon) block at the middle of the net.
Isabella Thoennes (Kiln; Hancock) pushed PRCC's lead to 5-3 in the first set on a give-and-go kill and the Wildcats tacked on another point to go ahead 6-3. That's about where the Fillies made their run. The set was soon tied 7-7. Although PRCC went back ahead 8-7, Panola College used two three-point runs to jump ahead 13-9 and never looked back in the 25-14 set.
The Fillies carried over their momentum to the second set, taking the first seven points en route to a 25-9 win.
The Wildcats were the aggressors in the third set. Chatman and Thoennes teamed up for a big block on the left side to give PRCC a 3-2. Advantage early on. PRCC won the next point before Panola College went on another run, taking seven of eight points to go ahead 15-9.
The visitors took nine of the final 12 points to claim the 25-13 advantage.
The Wildcats and Fillies will play another back-to-back series Oct. 14 and 15 in Carthage, Texas.
