ELLISVILLE, Miss.— The Pearl River women's soccer team stared adversity in the face Friday night capturing a crucial 2-1 double overtime win over rival Jones College.
"I thought the girls played really well and bounced back from that early goal we gave up, " Pearl River head coach Henrik Madsen said.
The Wildcats (5-0-1 overall, 5-0-1 MACJC) allowed the first goal of the game early in the contest and had to fight off several attempts by Jones (4-3 overall, 3-1 MACJC) to add on to their lead.
Maddie Beets (Long Beach) got the Wildcats back into the game with a great corner kick that tied the game 1-1 late in the second half.
"I thought we really had to win in it in regulation after Maddie's corner kick," Madsen said.
Jade Shaw (Carriere; Pearl River Central) ended the game with a beautiful kick that was tipped by the Jones goalkeeper to give the Wildcats the 2-1 win.
"I think what really made that play was the assist by Zigi (Ahortor) that set Jade up and she made a great kick," Madsen said.
The Wildcats return to action Tuesday when they take on East Central in Poplarville at 5 p.m.
