Rena Gordon's early goal was enough to lift Pearl River's women past host East Central 1-0 on Sunday.
Six minutes into the match, Zigi Ahortor (Accra, Ghana) switched fields with a pass out to Skylar Spears (Clarkdale) on the wing. The forward one-touched the ball to Gordon (Clarendon, Jamaica), who put the Lady Wildcats (3-4) ahead. With the win, PRCC swept the season series against ECCC.
"To see Skylar and Rena getting on the same page, that was a breath of fresh air," PRCC coach Jack Byrd said. "They have not been on the same page all year, and now I'm seeing a communication from them that we haven't seen all year.
"Hopefully Wednesday we'll see that continue."
PRCC dominated the game, talling 19 shots with 11 on target, but were only able to cash in the one time. On the other end of the field, the Lady Wildcats limited ECCC to one off-target shot.
Byrd singled out the performances of Kaitlyn Snyder (Leakesville; Greene County) and Ahortor, with the former seeing her most playing time of the year.
"Zigi had a turning point today," Byrd added. "It was her best game by a long shot."
Mallorie Seal (Brooklyn; Forrest County AHS) picked up the win without facing a shot.
The match was rescheduled due to shuffling from Tropical Storm Gordon.
PRCC hosts Southwest at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
