Former UAB standout Chelsee Black was added to the women's basketball staff prior to the 2017-18 season.
Black replaced Kelvin Nixon, who moved to Jones County Junior College to become a men’s basketball assistant.
Black is a native of Birmingham, Alabama, who graduated from Bessemer City High School. She played all four seasons at UAB, earning a spot in the starting lineup as a sophomore and serving as captain her last three seasons with the Blazers.
UAB had winning records all four years she was there, and she earned second-team All-Conference USA honors as a senior in 2015-16. She completed her career with 1,852 points, putting her 16th on the school’s all-time scoring list.
Black graduated from UAB in 2016 with a degree in communication studies with minors in psychology and health education. She served as a girls assistant basketball coach at Bessemer City in 2016-17.
Since she arrived in 2017 Black has helped head coach Scotty Fletcher improve the program year by year, most recently helping lead the team to a 16-9 record and an appearance in the MACJC and Region XXIII Tournaments for the first time since 2014.
