Pearl River falls in MACJC opener

SENATOBIA, Miss. — Pearl River led early in both games but couldn't quite close out Northwest, falling in both ends of its doubleheader in Senatobia. PRCC fell in Game 1, 5-4 in 10 innings before dropping Game 2, 8-3. 

GAME 1: NWCC 5, PRCC 4 (10 INN.)
Pearl River (7-11 overall, 0-2 MACJC) came up just short in Game 1.

Faith Peterson (Long Beach) put PRCC ahead 1-0 in the second inning with an RBI single. Sydney Runnels added to PRCC's lead later in the inning with a bases-loaded walk.

After Northwest (8-6, 2-0) got a run back in the third, Peterson extended PRCC's lead to 3-1 in the fifth with an RBI single.

The Rangers chipped into PRCC's lead with a run in the fifth and tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh to force extras.

Promise Shanks (Waynesboro; Wayne County) drove in her second run of the game in the ninth with another RBI single but NWCC tied it back up in the ninth before walking off the Wildcats in the 10th.

Runnels, Shanks and Peterson each had three hits for PRCC, with Raegan Havard (Lucedale; George County) adding two hits.

Grace Stringer (Moselle; South Jones) pitched into the ninth inning before giving way to Danielle Lalonde (Cecelia, La.).

GAME 2: NWCC 8, PRCC 3
Emily McDonald (Laurel; Wayne County) opened the scoring in Game 2 with a two-run triple.

After NWCC scored a run in the bottom of the first, Brooke Fagan (Kiln; Hancock) hit a solo homer in the second to give the Wildcats a 3-1 lead.

The Rangers leapfrogged PRCC, 4-3, in the third with a three-run double.

After tacking on a run in the fifth, Northwest scored three more in the sixth to possess an 8-3 advantage.

Fagan led PRCC with two hits. McDonald drove in two runs for the Wildcats.

Starter Gracie Barnett (Vancleave) was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs in three innings. Lalonde allowed four runs (one earned) in three innings in relief. 

NEXT UP
Pearl River returns to Wildcat Stadium on Wednesday to host LSU-Eunice for a 3 p.m. doubleheader. The series with the Bengals will open an eight-game homestand for Meeks' squad.
