MERIDIAN, Miss. — The Pearl River Wildcats softball team split their two games Sunday in the Meridian Rush Invitational, losing their first game to Trinity Valley College 6-3 before winning their second game over Southeastern Illinois College 7-6.
"We had opportunities to close the first game and we didn't but other than that we played solid," head coach Christie Meeks said. "I thought we played much better in the second game and bounced back which was big."
Game 1 Trinity Valley College 6, Pearl River 3
The Wildcats struck first in the top of the first inning when Abigail Thexton (Sumrall) drove in a run on a groundout.
Trinity Valley scored on an error in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game.
Kambryn Chassion (Picayune) scored on another RBI groundout to put the Wildcats up 2-1 in the top of the fourth.
The Wildcats (6-8) added to their lead in the top of the fifth when Reagan Havard (Lucedale; George County) worked the count to get a bases-loaded walk.
The Wildcats held the lead until the bottom of the seventh when Trinity Valley hit a three-run home run to earn a walk-off winner.
Gracie Barnett (Vancleave) got the start on the mound for the Wildcats, throwing 6 2/3 innings and giving up four hits, five walks and four earned runs while striking out seven.
Game 2 Pearl River 7, Southeastern Illinois College 6
Southeastern Illinois scored first in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.
McDonald got the Wildcats on the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the first.
Thexton added to the PRCC lead with an RBI single of her own in the bottom of the second.
Southeastern Illinois had a huge third inning plating five runs to take a 5-2 lead.
Faith Peterson (Long Beach) responded for PRCC with an RBI single to cut the lead to three runs.
The Wildcats took the lead again in the bottom of the fourth inning when McDonald hit another RBI single; Chassion then drew a bases-loaded walk and Peterson hit a two-RBI single to give the Wildcats a 7-6 lead.
PRCC held on to the lead to end the invitational on a high note.
Peterson led the team in RBIs with three.
Starter Grace Stringer (Moselle; South Jones) threw two innings, giving up six hits, one walk and five earned runs while striking out two.
Danielle Lalonde (Cecilia, La.) closed the game for the Wildcats, throwing five innings and giving up one hit and two walks while striking out three.
The Wildcats return to action Saturday when they host on Des Moines Area Community College and Northwest Florida State. The doubleheader at Wildcat Stadium begins at noon.
