Pearl River executes on both sides to sweep Co-Lin

POPLARVILLE, Miss. — The Pearl River Lady Wildcats are playing their best ball of the season and it showed Wednesday night at Lady Wildcat Stadium.

The Lady Wildcats defeated Copiah-Lincoln 2-1 and 5-2 playing quality softball in all phases of the games.

The sweep gave the Lady Wildcats (19-17 overall, 9-11 MACJC) five consecutive wins.

"We've been working on our timely hits and it showed tonight," coach Leigh White said. "We did get our timely hits tonight and we executed today and that was a good feeling. These are two big wins for us."

Game 1: PRCC 2, CLCC 1

Neely McLeod (Lucedale; George County) opened the scoring in the second inning with an RBI single to give the Lady Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

PRCC added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Jenna Comeaux (Lafayette, La.; Comeaux) hit an RBI single to score McLeod and extend the Lady Wildcat lead to two.

Co-Lin (23-12 overall, 12-10 MACJC) got within striking distance in the top of the seventh inning when it scored a run and advanced runners to second and third.

Grace Stringer (Moselle; South Jones) slammed the door shut, however, striking out the last two batters to give the Lady Wildcats the win 2-1.

McLeod let the team in hits with two.

"Neely has stepped up," White said. "She's been hitting the ball well these past few games and played well on both sides."

Stringer was fantastic in the circle for the Lady Wildcats picking up her 10th win of the season.

She pitched seven innings, allowing three hits, two walks and one run while striking out four.

"Grace battled," White said. "She held her composure in crunch time. That kid has grown so much and tonight she finished and that's big for us."

Game 2: PRCC 5, CLCC 2

The Lady Wildcats struck first again in Game 2 when Brooke Fagan (Kiln; Hancock) hit a two-run double in the bottom of the second inning.

Co-Lin cut into the lead in the top of the third inning when it plated a run to make it a 2-1 ball game.

The Lady Wildcats responded in the bottom of the fifth inning when Mary Grace Turner (Leakesville; Greene County) hit a solo shot that cleared the scoreboard in center field to give the Lady Wildcats a 3-1 lead.

McLeod followed that up with a two-run bomb to put the Lady Wildcats up 5-1.

Co-Lin responded with a home run of its own in the top of the sixth inning to cut into the lead but Pearl River's defense once again stepped up to secure the 5-2 victory.

Fagan led the team with three hits and tied for the team lead in RBIs with two along with McLeod.

Alyssa Pinero (Picayune) also had two hits, both doubles.

"Our whole morale has been different and you can tell," White said. "Their presence in the box was a lot different today and we got good results out of that."

Rylee Swilley (Kiln; Hancock) picked up the win for the Lady Wildcats, her fourth of the season.

Swilley pitched seven innings, allowing six hits, two walks and two runs.

"Rylee did great," White said. "I'm very pleased with both our pitchers. Both of them did a really good job in the circle."
