Pearl River comes up short in upset bid of No. 1 Jones College

POPLARVILLE, Miss. — Pearl River's softball team couldn't pile together the hits it needed to upset No. 1 Jones College on Monday, dropping both ends of the doubleheader 10-1 and 18-2.

Game 1: JC 10, PRCC 1 (5 inn.)

Jones College (40-4 overall, 17-0 MACJC) took an early advantage before PRCC (14-16, 4-10) tied it up in the bottom of the first. Pearl River loaded the bases on a Hannah Rasberry (Lucedale; George County) and Dallas Blaker (Bay St. Louis; Our Lady Academy) singles sandwiched around an Elizabeth Taggard (Picayune) walk. BreAnna Corkern (Watson, Live Oak) tied the game on a groundout to the right side.

Jones College scored five runs in the second and then tacked on two runs in the third and fifth innings to run-rule the Lady Wildcats in five innings.

Blaker and Mary Grace Turner (Leakesville; Greene County) led Pearl River with two hits. Taggard walked twice.

Rylee Swilley (Kiln; Hancock) took the loss, allowing six runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks in 1 2/3 innings. Blaker allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks in 2 2/3 innings before turning the game over to Gracie Barnett (Vancleave) for the final two outs. Blaker registered the staff's lone strikeout of the contest.

Game 2: JC 18, PRCC 2 (5 inn.)

Pearl River jumped ahead in Game 2. Brooke Fagan (Kiln; Hancock) reached on an error to open the first and came around to score on a Taggard sacrifice fly.

Jones College responded with a 10-run second inning to put the game out of reach.

Jenna Comeaux (Lafayette, La.; Comeaux) broke up Jones College's no hitter with a no doubter in the bottom of the fifth, belting a two out, two strike homer well beyond the center field wall.

Barnett, Grace Stringer (Moselle; South Jones), Krista Robles (Destrehan, La.) and Brianna Hargrove (Oakdale, La.) all pitched for PRCC. Stringer led the staff with two strikeouts.

Pearl River has a busy week ahead with a road trip to Holmes on Wednesday before returning home to play Coahoma in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Lady Wildcat Stadium. The doubleheader against CCC will be streamed at
