POPLARVILLE, Miss. — Pearl River men's soccer coach Drew Gallant has announced the addition of Michael Kuwornu as a volunteer assistant.
The former Mississippi College defender joins a staff that also includes newcomer Diego Figueroa.
"Mike was a very talented player," Gallant said. "He'll bring a lot of experience to our team. He has a great work ethic and attitude."
Kuwornu will have a big role in individual training sessions, technical work and certain aspects of PRCC's weight training program.
"After my years at Mississippi College, I thought working with Coach Gallant was a great decision because I have played with him and I believe in his mentality of how he wants to push players to become better on and off the field," Kuwornu said. "Growing up I always believed it was never too late and you're never too old to become better.
"That has been with me ever since. Every day is a new day to become a better athlete or person."
Kuwornu grew up in Kumasi, Ghana and played at Kwame Nkrumah Senior High School and later Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, where he was awarded freshman of the year in 2016. In 2017, Kuwornu joined MC. He saw action in 11 games with six starts and recorded two assists.
In 2018, Kuwornu played in all 14 of MC's matches, starting twice. He registered one assist.
As a senior in 2019, Kuwornu once again appeared in all 14 of MC's contests, making two starts. He finished the season with one assist. With Kuwornu's help, the Choctaws claimed the Gulf South Conference title for the first time since 2016.
"My three years at Mississippi College were a great experience for me to learn more about myself as a person and a soccer player in a new culture," Kuwornu said.
Beyond the college pitch, Kuwornu has also found great success playing in the Gulf Coast Premier League, winning a title with Gaffa FC in 2017 and another championship under the guidance of current PRCC women's coach Henrik Madsen in 2018.
In 2019, Kuwornu played for Hattiesburg Football Club before returning to Gaffa FC this year and leading the club to a Central Plains Championship.
Kuwornu is the son of Emmanuel Otutey Kuwornu and majored in graphic design at MC.
