Pearl River falls at No. 5 East Mississippi

SCOOBA, Miss. — Freshman running back Lance Stewart (Oxford; Lafayette County) eclipsed the century mark on the ground and receiver Khalil Levy (Ocean Springs) eclipsed 100-yards receiving Thursday night but it wasn't enough as Pearl River fell to East Mississippi 49-15 at Sullivan-Windham Field.

After playing their first two games on the road, the Wildcats will play their home opener Thursday against Copiah-Lincoln. Kickoff at Dobie Holden Stadium is set for 6 p.m.

SCORING RECAP

The Lions and Wildcats battled in a back-and-forth first half.

EMCC opened the scoring on its first possession.

PRCC didn't score on its next possession but after the defense got a big three-and-out the Wildcats marched down the field and scored on a 35-yard field goal by Gayden Hence (Hattiesburg).

The Lions closed out the first quarter with a touchdown but the Wildcats responded, marching 53 yards. The six-play drive was kept alive by a 40-yard pass-and-catch over the middle from Terrence Humphrey (Clarksdale) to Levy. The freshman receiver beat his man, caught the pass over the middle and darted across the field, diving for the pylon. Although he was called down, Stewart scored on the next play, beating three EMCC defenders to the opposite pylon for a 3-yard score. PRCC missed the ensuing two-point attempt to trail the Lions 14-9.

The Lions scored to extend their lead 21-9 with 9:32 remaining in the first half. Late in the quarter PRCC responded once again. Aided by 38 rushing yards from Stewart on two carries, the Wildcats scored on a 22-yard pass from Humphrey to Levy. Humphrey stood tall in the pocket and despite being clobbered by a Lion lineman, he delivered a strike over the middle to Levy, who found his way into the end zone. PRCC missed the extra-point attempt and trailed EMCC 21-15 at the half.

The Lions pulled away in the second half, scoring 28 unanswered points.

LEADERS

Stewart finished the game with 101 yards rushing on 19 carries. T.J. Wash (Forest; Scott Central) and Tionne Frost (Gulfport) finished with 43 and 37 yards respectively on five carries each.

Humphrey completed 12 of 30 passes for 182 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Levy led all PRCC receivers with four receptions and 123 yards.
