POPLARVILLE – Two sophomore athletes for Pearl River Community College earned special recognition Friday at the school's annual commencement ceremony.
Women's soccer player Kayla Nobles (Hurley) and men's basketball player Jerrod Rigby (Bay St. Louis) were recognized as having the highest grade-point averages among all athletes over the course of their two-years at PRCC.
"We're proud of all of our student-athletes, and these two particularly," said PRCC athletic director Jeff Long.
"It takes a lot of dedication to balance the demands of an athletic schedule on top of their classwork, and to go through four semesters with such high grades says a lot about their character and work ethic."
Nobles, who prepped at East Central High School, finished with an overall 3.90 GPA, while Rigby, a graduate of St. Stanislaus, finished with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
"I came from a high school, St. Stanislaus, where academics were emphasized," said Rigby. "Coming from that background, it really wasn't that hard to balance schoolwork with basketball."
Nobles will move on to Mississippi State in the fall.
"It really wasn't all that hard," said Nobles of her two years at PRCC. "You just have to prioritize and stay organized."
